ON MY MIND

Yesterday in the car, S thoughtfully asked, "So does Ariel just poop out of her mermaid tail?"

The mind of a five-year-old is a wonderful place. I never know what it will produce, but I can always count on it being magical and thought-provoking, and usually hilarious.

My mind isn't quite as wonderful. Thirty years have made it a rather complex place, and it's often riddled with mundane- okay, inane- ideas and thoughts that I suspect are blocking the flow of potentially amazing ones.

In the spirit of the chief on Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, I'll just extract a few out to clear space for more. Here's what's on my mind lately:

- Okay, this one is actually brilliant. I got home from running errands just before bedtime the other night and set my grocery bags in the laundry room to avoid my kids going through everything. When I went to collect them, I decided to leave the bag of chocolate chips I'd just bought on the shelf above my washer and dryer. I'm not convinced that the laundry room is the best possible place to store chocolate you don't necessarily want to share. It's too early to tell, but it just might help me switch the laundry quicker.

- I used to listen to Enrique Iglesias a lot when I was in high school. I heard him on the radio recently and wondered why I ever stopped. I don't actually think that comeback will every happen, though.

- What is it with songs perpetuating this idea of how people (read: women) deserve to be treated (by men)? Can't we just agree that we all need to treat each other well because we're all human beings worthy of respect?

- How are people seriously defending Trump? Don't try to answer that. I don't believe it's possible.

- I feel like having a party on the night of the election to eat ice cream and carbs and hopefully breathe a huge sigh of relief when it's over. But mostly I feel like having a going away party for the Obamas. I miss them already.

- I'm not the only one who cleans the house top to bottom before leaving on vacation, am I? It just seems so much more appealing to come home to a clean house, for the three minutes it lasts. I will probably have to vacuum myself out the door for this to happen, but I'm committed to seeing it through.

- I really cannot decide if saving several hours of driving is worth hauling three car seats through the airport. The thought of keeping track of my three small children, plus our luggage, plus carry-ons, and three huge convertible car seats in a busy airport makes me sweat. I used to think driving was worth it, but now I'm not so sure. We shall see.

- Blowdrying and styling my hair is one of my very least favorite things to do. It's probably fairly obvious. My hair texture has changed over the years, so I can't let it air dry and wear it curly like I used to. This is incredibly fascinating, I know, but I'd rather fold and put away laundry than style my hair.

- I'm down to the last few episodes of Big Love. I haven't binge watched tv shows for a long time. The fact that I'm able to again says a lot about my kids' sleep habits and I'm not complaining. I am, however, taking suggestions for new shows to watch.

- Would you rather binge watch a tv series or read a book series? I say books. I become more emotionally invested in them than a show and I always feel a little lost the day after finishing one. I haven't read a really great series in awhile, though, so I guess I'm open for suggestions on that front, as well.

I'm sure this has been well worth the read. Here's hoping it clears the way for more brilliant gems, you know, like chocolate in the laundry room.
